Walker County Jail Overview
Walker County Jail is operated by the Walker County Sheriff's Office jail division. The official county jail page names Jail Captain John Davila as the facility contact and identifies this jail as the local custody point for people booked by several agencies. Those booking agencies include the Texas Department of Public Safety, Huntsville Police Department, Sam Houston State University Police Department, and other local or county law-enforcement officers. That matters for Walker County inmate records because the arresting officer may work for a city, campus, or state agency, while the custody record may still be held in the county jail system after booking.
The jail handles pretrial detainees, bench-warrant arrests, parole violator holds, convicted misdemeanants, and convicted felons who are waiting for transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. A jail booking is not a final court result. It is the custody event after arrest. Court charges can change after prosecutor review, and a person sentenced to TDCJ custody may later move out of Walker County Jail and into a state prison unit. For the broader custody picture, the Walker County inmate population includes both the county jail and the much larger state-prison presence in the Huntsville area.
The official Walker County jail page is the source for the jail contact, Odyssey jail-records link, mail addresses, and money links. The screenshot below comes from the official jail page and shows why that county source is the starting point for local custody questions.
Walker County's official jail page lists the jail address, phone, captain, mail rules, and Odyssey jail-records access.
The county page also separates the jail contact from the Sheriff's Office administrative address, which helps avoid sending jail mail, visits, or records requests to the wrong location.
Walker County Jail Population
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards publishes county-submitted population reports for Texas jails. In the June 1, 2026 current population workbook, the Walker County Jail row reported a rated capacity of 268 beds and a total jail population of 209. That same source placed the jail at 77.99 percent of rated capacity on that reporting date. The figures are a snapshot, not a live roster, and TCJS notes that submitting agencies are responsible for data quality and timeliness.
The same TCJS data shows why local jail records and state-prison records should not be blended. Walker County Jail held local pretrial felony and misdemeanor detainees, parole violator categories, and convicted felons or parole violators sentenced to TDCJ divisions but not yet transferred. Once a sentenced person is accepted into the state system, the public search path changes to TDCJ. A current county jail population count can therefore include people who will soon leave the county jail roster and appear in the state locator instead.
| Measure | Figure | Source |

Look Up Walker County Jail Inmates
The official online route for Walker County Jail records is Tyler/Odyssey public access. The county jail page links to Walker County Odyssey Public Access, and a direct jailing search endpoint was encountered during research. Automated inspection could not capture the jail search fields because the direct endpoint returned a human-verification page. That limitation should not be read as a lack of public access. A person searching in a normal browser may need to pass the Tyler/Odyssey or AWS WAF verification before opening the jail-records area.
- Open the official Walker County Jail page and follow the online Odyssey jail-records link, or open the county's Tyler/Odyssey public-access portal.
- Complete any browser verification and choose the jail-records or jailing search area if the portal asks for a search type.
- Search with the name details available. If the person was just arrested, try again later because new bookings may not post instantly.
- If the portal is unavailable, call Walker County Jail at (936) 435-2412 for current custody questions.
- If the person has been sentenced and transferred, search TDCJ Inmate Search or TDCJ IVSS instead of county Odyssey.

Walker County Jail Contact
The jail street address, jail phone, and sheriff administration address are related but not identical. The jail page gives the detention facility address at 655 FM 2821 W. The sheriff administrative office and Justice Building area are nearby at 717 FM 2821 W. For inmate records, use the direct jail phone first for custody status, then the Sheriff's Office written public-information channels for copies or records not visible through Odyssey.

Walker County Jail Visitation
Walker County Jail visitation is handled through NCIC account setup according to the county's official visitation policies. The county page gives separate windows for off-site and on-site visits. It does not publish a full captured dress code, contraband list, child visitor rule, or visit-length rule in the research material, so visitors should confirm identification and entry limits with the jail before travel.
| Visit type | Days | Hours | Scheduling window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off-site | Monday-Thursday | 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM | 14 days to 5 minutes in advance |
| Off-site | Friday-Sunday | 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM | 14 days to 5 minutes in advance |
| On-site | Friday-Sunday | 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM | 7 days to 2 days in advance |
On-site scheduling has a longer lead time than off-site scheduling. That is a local rule worth checking before a trip to Huntsville, especially when a person has just been booked or when the housing assignment is still changing. Attorney visits and professional visits may follow different processes than public visits, but those details were not in the captured county visitation text.
Walker County Jail Mail and Money
The jail's mail and money rules use different addresses. Regular letters and cards go to the Walker County mail processing address in Longview. Commissary money orders go to a Huntsville PO Box and must include the inmate's name and SO number. The county's money for inmates page states that no money is accepted at the facility. It also links TigerDeposits for web deposits, but the captured official page did not list deposit fees or phone/video rates.
| Service | Official detail |
|---|---|
| Letters and cards | Walker County- Mail, PO Box 591, Longview, TX 77342 |
| Money orders | Walker County Jail, PO Box 6424, Huntsville TX 77342 |
| Required on money order | Inmate name and SO number |
| Facility deposits | No money accepted at the facility |
| Web deposits | TigerDeposits, following the vendor prompts |
The SO number is the local sheriff's office identifier. If it is not visible in the jail record, call the jail before mailing a money order. Mail sent to the street address or money sent without the required identifier may be delayed or rejected under the jail's processing rules.
Walker County Jail Booking
A Walker County arrest generally moves from officer arrest to transport, intake, identity collection, property inventory, booking-record creation, medical or mental-health screening, classification, magistrate or bond action, and then housing, release, or transfer. The official sources did not publish a local booking-duration rule. New arrests may not appear instantly in Odyssey, and a person can be in intake before a public record is easy to locate.
The booking charge is also not the final court result. Walker County's Criminal District Attorney reviews Class B and above criminal cases and may accept, reject, dismiss, amend, reduce, or present charges to a grand jury. For that reason, the jail roster answers custody questions, while court records answer what was formally filed. A reader comparing jail charges to filed charges may also need Walker County court records after jail arrest.
Note: Confirm custody and visit status with Walker County Jail before travel because recent bookings and releases can move faster than public records.
